About the Artwork
Perspicuum is a selection from “ARENA,” a special exhibition at the Taipei Museum of Fine Arts that transposes the process, exploration, or dismantling of symbols; and the shift and flow of humanistic concern in connection with geographical space through the process of transforming the transparent state of contemplative expression, and by experimenting with the symbiosis between “exhibition” and “performance.” As choreographer SUN Shang-Chi says, perspicuum is a concept; this concept is quite simply to experiment with everyday objects and symbols and their influence on human beings, then further reflecting on and organizing preexisting contemplative contexts.
The performance framework uses conceptual texts to establish a disturbance in the dynamism of music, dance, and the spoken word while contemplating the relationship between kinetic performance and static life. The content for every performance during the exhibition period vary in their setting details and interactive potential. With the progression of time, the work continues to evolve within the penetrating state of flow. Preset narrative foundations within in the space establish the interactive density between the performers. This is not only choreography but also a transfiguration and deformation of the corporeal form, a dialogue between the body and its organs. At the same time, the formless boundaries, where the virtual and the real meet, are probed through infiltrating percussive rhythms in the arena located between the private space and public intercourse. The performative limbs of dance theater create a transparent and strange correspondence in the space with the audience still in close proximity, to contemplate the imagination or conundrum of coexistence in the contemporary world.
